Professional Carpet Cleaning Basics

Carpets can build up stains, dirt and allergens that can be harmful to your health and others in your home. This is where regular carpet cleaning comes in. The bottom line, regular professional carpet cleaning makes carpets look better and last longer in the end saving you money over time.

TheInstitute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (now known as the Clean Trust) educates industry. This is a certifying group for the textiles cleaning industry that sets the standards for the carpet cleaning, and the fire and water restoration industry. The IICRC accepts five basic professional cleaning methods.

IIRC approves high-pressure steam extraction “steam cleaning”, dry extraction cleaning, dry foam extraction method, rotational brushes and the absorbent pad method.

Of the five methods both carpet manufacturers and health professionals recommend the steam cleaning method over any other method.

The steam carpet cleaning method involves the following process: after pre-treating the carpets with an alkaline agent, pressurized and applied with high temperature, and appropriate dwell time, a pressurized cleaning tool referred to as a wand passes over the surface to thoroughly rinse and vacuum all pre-treatment residue, and particles. An acetic acid solution additive is typically used to restore neutral fiber pH. The acid rinse neutralizes the alkaline residues, and can soften cleaned fabrics.

Drying typically takes 4-8 hours, dependent on the equipment and chemicals used. Better quality equipment results in quicker drying times. Better quality equipment will usually have the carpets dried within 6 hours. Also, homeowners are encouraged to leave their heat or AC on during after after the cleaning process.

Carpet protector can be applied to resist stains and allow dirt to be easily cleaned, thereby extending the life of the carpet. Once the solution completely it provides a protective barrier over the fibers and resists stains, soils and other contaminants from adhering to the carpet. In addition, carpet protector also protects from general wear due to abrasion.
